Implementing a customised Laboratory Information Management System at a major mining organisation

Major Global Resources Company

The client’s ore grading and quality assurance system was outdated, no longer supported by the system manufacturer, and unable to handle the increasing volume of samples requiring testing. This represented a critical risk to the business as the proof of ore quality certificates provided by the system are required to guarantee quality for each iron ore shipment.

To address this risk, they purchased a new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) called Thermo Fisher Sample Manager. As every LIMS is customised for each client, there were no training resources available with the system. BHPB IO therefore needed the services of an organisation that could quickly learn how the system configuration and the business processes interacted and then design and deliver training in LIMS that reflected this to ensure the successful transition from the old to new system.

Mango assigned training specialists to work with the system developers and the operating team to understand current processes and how they would be managed within LIMS. Based on this research and analysis, the training specialist developed training resources for the project.

As a result of Mango’s highly flexible team approach, they were able to deal with the many system changes that impacted on training and meet the business’ requirement for a condensed transition approach.

Consequently, the business has successfully transitioned to the new LIMS. This provides their clients with the required certification, removes the risk of the previous system crashing with no support available, and ensures capability to handle increased demand from business growth.
